10 years of the Gran Telescopio Canarias


The GTC celebrates 10 years with more than 14.000 hours of observations behind it and about 450 articles published in top-level journals. This instrument, showing the high technological level of Spanish industry, remains on the scientific frontier 10 years later and promises to continue many more years with the arrival of instruments such as MIRADAS and GTCAO+FRIDA.

Birth and maturity of research at the IAC

logo 50 añosLast week, the Congress “Boosting Astrophysics in Spain: 50 years of doctoral thesis at the IAC” was held at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, where a small compendium of some of the research that was carried out in the center was exposed through twenty talks, between the more than 300 theses defended in its 50 years of history.

The event, full of emotion, was a historical journey of research from its beginnings to the present that has placed the IAC as one of the leaders of the astrophysical research in the world. In the air you could breathe the nostalgia of the past, the pride for the successes harvested so far and the energy to continue reaching higher and higher.

The ARTEMIS telescope in the hunt for exoplanets in the Teide Observatory

iac logoThe new ARTEMIS 1m diameter robotic telescope has been inaugurated at the Teide Observatory and will look for Earth-like exoplanets that rotate around ultra-cold dwarf stars. This is the fourth telescope of the SPECULOOS network, it is the first in the Canary Islands, although it may not be the last.

The Teide Observatory could also have new Cherenkov telescopes

The National Institute of Astrophysics of Italy (INAF) and the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) are studying the installation and operation of the ASTRI Mini-Array of Cherenkov telescopes at the Teide Observatory.
